Chapter nineteen

We fly the rest of the day and make it back into London by nightfall. I physically can’t be in Archer’s company any longer, so I send the sergeants with him and our prisoner to the palace and I head back to Headquarters to debrief the generals. The prisoner will be sent to the dungeons underneath the palace while she awaits interrogation, and then she’ll most likely be sent to prison.

I land in the outdoor pad of the compound and find the place in utter chaos. Several aerial units rush around readying to take off on broom while foot soldiers pile into giant tanks. I pause in the middle of the commotion and manage to snag a private as he rushes by me, grabbing him by the hem of his tunic. He squeaks when he sees me.

“Captain! You’re back!” He struggles out of my grasp so that he can bow and then keeps moving, rushing over to one of the commanding officers, a captain I don’t recognize. The private makes a few hasty remarks to him and then the captain rushes over to me. A few strands of grey hair sweep over his bald head, but they don’t do much to hide the fact that he’s glistening with sweat.

“What’s going on here, Captain?” I ask as he approaches me.

“Captain Carmichael is Prince Archer with you?” he asks, and I notice the other commanding officers taking notice.

“He’s currently on his way to the palace with Sergeant Jacobs and the O’Malleys. What is going on here?” I repeat. He physically relaxes, closing his eyes. All at once, everyone around us stills.

“Thank goodness you’re back safe,” the captain says, his voice softening. “Three of the sergeants returned from your mission an hour ago saying you were separated. We were about to begin a search party. General Weatherbeak said you went dark a few days ago—"

“Did you say three?” I stifle the cry that threatens to burst from my throat.

“Yes, Captain,” he says with a smile. Three sergeants. They all made it back. Tears sting my eyes and for the first time since our group has split up, I can take a full breath. “One was gravely injured. They’re all in the medical bay now with General Carmichael and General Weatherbeak.”

“Thank you,” I nod. He returns the gesture as I turn and sprint into the underground compound. I never thought I would be so happy to see these dark stone hallways, but something in my chest eases as I spiral down and down towards the medical bay.

I skid to a halt when I reach a wooden door with a beautiful golden carving of the sun. The door is already ajar, and I can hear several hushed voices and see the white light of the healers inside. I push into the white-tiled room, so bright with its fluorescent electricity compared to the sconces of the hallway. The first few beds are empty, but the third has a pale blue curtain drawn around it.

I throw back the curtain and find Marcus and my mother in a deep conversation with Soto.
